The popular Adelaide dessert shop opened by a television baker closed its doors less than two years after it was first opened due to the increasing cost of living.
Jeremy Allan announced the closure of Urban Desserts Glenelg last month. Allan was a contestant on The Great Australian Bake Off 2016.
The store opened in September 2021 and sold a variety of cakes and desserts. However, it struggled with a drop in traffic and rising costs.
Mr Allan confirmed to 7 News that the store had closed, citing a lack of foot traffic and an increase in rent as the primary reasons.
Allan stated that “there was also a lack (of) support or negotiation from landlords and real estate agents with small businesses.”
A sign thanking previous customers was apparently seen on a store in a southern suburb without any notice.
The post stated, “We did our best.” Urbans Glenelg is closing due to a lack of support.
We want to thank all the wonderful people who visited us when we were open.
We know that you spread the word, but we cannot afford to stay here.
Urban Desserts will continue to operate its two other stores, located at the Colonnades Shopping Centre in Morphett Vale and Colonnades Shopping Centre.
Mr Allan told 7 News that the other stores were doing well. Colonnades were “in particular” booming among locals.
Mr Allan stated that “(the closure) will not reflect on our other locations or stores, and they are all open.”
Businesses across the country are feeling the pinch of rising costs.
Caruso’s Italian Restaurant, located in Gymea within Sydney’s Sutherland Shire, closed its doors in March. The restaurant cited “greedy companies” and the cost of living.
The cost of fresh produce, for example, has become “unbearable,” according to Rocky and Kerrin Pittarelli.
